The lucky chimney sweep tradition
In 1730 King George II lost control of his carriage as his horses bolted during a royal procession and a chimney sweep from the crowd came to his rescue and stopped the horses and then disappeared back into the crowd. After the procession the king, being unable to thank the chimney sweep personally, made a Royal Decree that from that day forward all chimney sweeps are bearers of good luck and should be treated with respect.
Since that Decree was passed it has been considered to be good luck if a bride sees a chimney sweep on her wedding day and luckier still if the bride receives a kiss from the sweep and he also shakes the groom's hand.
